I had a random thought (not as random as Pinky but close). It is generally accepted that the Princesses are immortal, well at lease Celestia and Luna. What if this is incorrect. We as humans have an average life span of around 80 years or there about. So, we can assume that ponies have an average life span as well. We know they die because Apple Bloom stood on a casket during the Perfect Pony song. So, what if the Princess have an average life span as well, something like 6 or 7 thousand years.
That's a possibility, and im sure its a true one, i can see that happening in the show too. But now you've got me thinking of Twilight crying at the side of a hospital bed. ;3;
interesting theory, however, even if their lifespan is so long (and not infinite), that doesn't make their life situation of outliving all their non princess/alicorn friends any better.
Well, since Lauren Faust wanted Sparky as Celestia's successor, it is a very safe assumption that they will eventually die. Hard to succeed somepony who is still alive.
Celestia and Luna COULD move elsewhere, you know. We as fans do not know their limits except through hints--Luna survived on the Moon for a thousand years and Celestia can open some kind of strange otherworld for Twilight Sparkle. Perhaps, they can go to other places most ponies cannot, and Twilight's succession is more about filling in for a very long-lived (and potentially immortal) being that wants to see another of her kind succeed, than about taking over when Celestia dies. On the other hoof, it would be interesting to see how death is handled in a cartoon like this...
Those are some good points. I have a feeling we will never truly know since this is a kids' show but your thinking makes a lot of sense.
Meghan McCarthy has straight up said that Twilight won't outlive her friends. So it's probably safe to assume that the extended Alicorn lifespan only applies to Full-Blooded Alicorns like Celestia and Luna.
You seem to forget that: A. Twilight needs her friends. B. Hasbro wants ALL the money. Isn't it just as likely that the rest of the Mane Six will be turned into Alicorns? Think of the profit!
I would like to think that princesses nullify their immortality when they couple with a chosen mate (Said mate should be loyal and faithful). AND if they're not blood related to the Alicorn Sisters. This is all just my theory, though. Princess Cadence, for example, is deemed as a relative of the royal sisters. It would be a bit tragic if we see Cadence outlive her husband. To make up for this, the marriage between Shiny and Cadence has removed Cadence's immortality. We are not even sure if Cadence really is a blood relative of the royal sisters. I made a post on the headcanons thread if you want to read my theory about this. Read it here! http://www.everypony.com/forums/sho...your-headcanon&p=454006&viewfull=1#post454006
